Joseph A. Camilleri

Joseph A. CamilleriJoseph A. Camilleri is Professor of International Relations and Director of the Centre for Dialogue at La Trobe University. He has written and lectured extensively on Europe and the United States in international relations, governance and globalisation, human rights, North-South relations, international organisations, the United Nations, and the Asia-Pacific region. His most recent books include: Regionalism in the New Asia Pacific Order (Edward Elgar 2003); co-edited Democratizing Global Governance (Palgrave Macmillan 2002); edited Religion and Culture in Asia Pacific: Violence or Healing? (Vista 2001), States, Markets and Civil Society in Asia Pacific (Edward Elgar 2000). Joseph Camilleri is actively engaged in international research, education and advocacy on issues of human rights, civilisation dialogue, global governance reform, peace and security. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences, and the recipient of St Michael's Award for Distinguished Service to the Community. At La Trobe University he coordinates the Bachelor of International Relations and the Master of International Policy Studies.

  • A seven-year 2-volume study of the Political Economy of the Asia-Pacific Region – the second volume has just been published by Edward Elgar in the UK and US – funded by a large ARC grant
  • UN Reform and Global Governance (jointly sponsored by La Trobe University, the Toda Institute in Hawaii and Focus on the Global South in Bangkok)

Leadership in collaborative research

  • Organised and convened several major international conferences, including: The United Nations: Between Sovereignty and Global Governance (July 1995), Globalization: The Experiences and Perspectives of the Religious Traditions of Asia Pacific (July 1997), and Religion and Culture in Asia Pacific: Violence or Healing? (October 2000), Securing the Region Post-September 11 (September 2005)
  • Initiated the 5-year international research project on Global Governance Reform, which attracted over $400,000 in external grants; involving an eminent Board of Advisers, including Dr Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the former UN Secretary-General, Prof. Richard Falk (Princeton University) and Dr Javad Zarif, the current Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister; and resulted in the publication of two books and some 18 papers in internationally refereed journals.

Other contributions:

  • Played leadership role in the foundation and subsequent development of the scholarly journal Pacifica Review: Peace, Security and Global Change (have chaired the Editorial Board over the last seventeen years)
  • Supervised more than 25 PhD and MA (by research) candidates, several of whom have closely collaborated on research projects dealing with Asia Pacific
  • Contributed to the intellectual work of the Council for Security and Co-operation in Asia Pacific (CSCAP), especially its Australian Committee (especially in its formative period)
  • Provided regular advice and intellectual support (through guest lectures, forums, workshops, briefing papers and board membership) for research and non-government organisations in the region (e.g. OXFAM International, Focus on the Global South, Toda Institute for Peace and Global Policy Research, Pax Christi International) as well as for public affairs and educational media programmes
  • Have given lectures and keynote addresses in Japan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, India and New Zealand
