A series of activities to bring together the European Union and Bendigo area interests in education, business, trade and community activity.

Did you know that Australia’s largest economic partner is the European Union (EU)? Have you heard that in 2007 more than one million Australians visited Europe, and that nine out of ten Australians are of European descent? Most Australians aren’t aware of these facts, so the EU, through the Delegation of the European Commission to Australia in Canberra and its Member State embassies and the Innovative Universities European Union Centre are bringing Europe to Greater Bendigo. This programme will include public forums, lectures, speeches, workshops, competitions and information stalls and will be supported by the City of Greater Bendigo, the Bendigo Business Council, La Trobe University and the Monash European and EU Centre.

M. BurleighMichael Burleigh, IUEU Centre sponsored guest for the Melbourne Writers Festival
29 August 2008, Capitol Theatre, Melbourne, Australia
The MWF session with Michael Burleigh was very successful, he held a 30 minute talk about his book and his encounters with (former) terrorists and victims of terrorism. He showed graphic pictures of terrorist slogans and symbols on the big screen. After his talk Michael and Dr. Spaaij discussed the role of the internet, the limitations of the current anti-terrorism strategies and “what needs to be done”. They then opened it up and welcomed questions from members of the audience. The audience was very engaged and Michael got some challenging questions.

Newcastle University‘Two Way Traffic: Modern European artists represented in the La Trobe University Art Collection’
29 April – 13 June: An art exhibition sponsored by the IUEU Centre (venue: La Trobe University Art Museum)

Two waves of emigrants arrived in Australia from Europe during the middle decades of the twentieth century, each one distinctly different in its origins of displacement. The first wave of human traffic from the Diaspora was a result of the European crisis of Nazism and Fascism, with many of European 'enemy aliens' arriving via official military transport. The second post-war phase of immigration brought a much larger number of skilled labourers and artisans attracted to a new life in a country that promised many opportunities within its social, economic, educational and cultural reconstruction programmes. Within both of these tides arrived artists who contributed to the cultural and artistic development of Australian art and culture. Indeed, the two decades between 1940 and 1960 belong in many ways to the Europeans, and this exhibition looks at works by some of those émigré artists who became a vibrant force in modern Australian art. Guest curator: Sheridan Palmer.
